Castaways- February 7

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God…my Savior and my God. Psalm 43:5

Sheep are funny creatures. They are very helpless and not terribly smart. They will go out to feed in the pasture, find a ditch, and topple over into it landing upside down. Once on their backs, they are stuck in that position and will die if the shepherd does not rescue them. They are called “cast” sheep. They are cast down in a ditch. They are cast over on their backs. They feel helpless and doomed…until a shepherd rescues them.

We are like sheep. Sometimes (and it happens to everyone) we get cast down—or downcast—and we feel stuck and hopeless. We are sad over something that has happened, or maybe we don’t know what has made us sad— we just are. We need a shepherd to rescue us. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, gives us hope. He takes us out of the ditch and sets us on our feet again, showing us the right way to go. We need to depend on him and trust in him, just like sheep trust
their shepherd.

Dear Lord, Sometimes I feel cast down. I feel stuck in my sadness. I don’t know how to lift myself out of the ditch, and that makes me feel hopeless. Please put your hope in my heart. Help me grab hold of your hand and hang on. Amen.
